But for the audience members who attend local theater each year, we often have little idea of the financial realities faced by the people we see onstage.

Personal finances are a sensitive issue, and it comes as no surprise that the many actors we approached preferred to keep it that way. They cited privacy concerns. Also, it might not be considered politic to reveal what a given theater has paid for a run.

This isn't about calling theater companies miserly, by the way. Some might be less sensitive than others to the plight of an actor's wallet. But bottom line, budgets are finite. And so often in live theater, they also are inescapably very limited.

The professional union of stage actors is Actors Equity, which negotiates minimum pay rates for its members. Some theaters operate under Equity contracts and rules example: a big theater such as the Goodmanand some do not example: a small storefront theater such as Curious Theatre Branch.

Even within the Equity system, the pay minimums fluctuate depending on a theater's specific designation -- a complicated system of tiers and levels and contracts. By and large, Equity actors support themselves through their work as performers.

But according to actress Linda Gillum: "No one really makes their living just doing theater, so we all do something else. That's a nice chunk for a single day's work, but those opportunities are few and far between. Health insurance is also a big motivating factor for actors.

Equity members must work 20 weeks a year to qualify for the union's health plan. Most shows run from nine to 18 weeks including rehearsals. The pressure to work enough weeks looms large. At the other end of the spectrum are non-Equity actors appearing in fringe and storefront productions.

And it's not because the companies are stingy. The money simply isn't there. Under these circumstances, any pay is gravy. And forget the old cliche about actors waiting tables or tending bar.

The majority I spoke to work day jobs in an office, where the health benefits help compensate for the tedium and fluorescent lighting. A quick explanation of Equity's labyrinth of contract designations: Contracts offered by the Goodman, Northlight or Court Theatres, fall under the rules of the League of Resident Theaters. After Feb.

By the way, Equity companies can and frequently do offer more than the minimum -- up to several hundred dollars more -- which is based on seniority or an actor's perceived value in the marketplace.Yet, beyond the glamour, the reality for the vast majority of actors is the profession fails to pay the bills and many have to work second jobs and perform for free in the hope they will get noticed.

The numbers support the findings of a survey carried out last year by acting union Equity. I work with a lot of actors through acting and the union, and know a lot of members who are struggling. Few can get by without another job. Two thirds of those surveyed were trained professionals in another industry or had an employer who will allow them to take time off to act. A third of respondents do short-term temp work in between acting jobs. Ms Timms has had to work at a range of jobs, including at Madame Tussauds and is currently a care assistant along with working at theatre company Strange Arrangements.

However, the industry could make big improvements by giving actors greater access to the top, well paid, jobs. A quarter of respondents revealed they had taken jobs at below the national minimum wage, ones where only expenses were offered, or where there was no payment at all.

The union has just appointed a new organiser to concentrate on the issue full time. This came after it took one fringe company to tribunal accused of taking advantage of young actors and crew.

While 43 per cent of respondents said that low paid and unpaid work had not been beneficial to their careers, others had said that it brought them free training, audition practice, experience and credits and networking opportunities. Some had led to paid work or heading to festivals such as the Edinburgh Fringe. There are too many actors and too few jobs. The biggest barrier to work, the survey reported, was being seen by casting directors, agents and employers. Just fewer than 15 per cent said the most challenging aspect was budgeting and earning enough to survive.

The problem has become worse over the past decade. Want to bookmark your favourite articles and stories to read or reference later? Start your Independent Premium subscription today. Please enter your email address Please enter a valid email address Please enter a valid email address.

The team uses fringe science and FBI investigative techniques to investigate a series of unexplained, often ghastly occurrences, which are related to mysteries surrounding a parallel universe.

The series has been described as a hybrid of fantasy, procedural dramas and serialsinfluenced by films like Altered States and television shows such as LostThe X-Files and The Twilight Zone. The series began as a traditional mystery-of-the-week series and became more serialized in later seasons.

Most episodes contain a standalone plot, with several others also exploring the series' overarching mythology.

Critical reception was at first lukewarm but became more favorable after the first season, when the series began to explore its mythology, including parallel universes and alternate timelines. The show, along with cast and crew, were nominated for many major awards. Despite its move to the " Friday night death slot " and low ratingsthe series developed a cult following. It also spawned two six-part comic book series, an alternate reality gameand three novels. The Fringe Division investigates cases relating to fringe scienceranging from transhumanist experiments gone wrong to the prospect of a destructive technological singularity to a possible collision of two parallel universes. In Season 2the occurrences are found to be in conjunction with activities of a parallel universe, which is plagued by singularities occurring at weakened points of the fabric between worlds; over there, scientists have developed an amber -like substance that isolates these singularities as well as any innocent people caught in the area on its release.

The Fringe team deals with more cases that are leading to a "great storm" as the parallel universe appears to be at war with the prime one, engineered by human-machine hybrid shapeshifters from the parallel universe. Walter had crossed over on the frozen ice of Reiden Lake in to administer the cure for the alternate version of Peter, but, after accidentally destroying a dose of the cure upon transport, he instead brought the boy across.

On return, they fell through the ice but were saved by the Observer September Michael Cerveriswho told Walter of the importance of "the boy", which Walter took to mean Peter.

Recovering in the present, Peter alters his plan and uses the Machine to merge the two rooms, creating a bridge where inhabitants of both universes can solve their dilemma, before time is re-written so September The Observer doesn't save him and is forgotten by both Walter and Olivia.

Season 4 begins in an alternate timelineone in which September had failed to save the alternate version of Peter inaccording to the Observers. Peter is pulled into this new timeline due to the actions of the alternate timeline's Fringe team, which includes Lincoln Lee Seth Gabel. Peter initially works to return to his own timeline, fueled by fears that his memories are altering Cortexiphan-dosed Olivia's of this timeline, but after encountering a wounded September, Peter comes to learn that this timeline is truly his home, and both he and Olivia come to accept the change, rekindling their affair.

The Fringe division is forced to close the dimensional bridge, but this fails to stop Bell's plan. Walter is left with one choice, to shoot and kill Olivia, her death disrupting the process and saving the world. Olivia's "death" is only temporary, as the Cortexiphan in her body is consumed to repair the bullet wound, leaving her alive and healthy but lacking her psionic abilities. As Olivia and Peter begin their lives together, September appears to Walter and warns that the Observers "are coming".

The fifth and final season begins infollowing from the flash-forward fourth-season episode "Letters of Transit". Walter reveals he and September developed a plan to defeat the Observers, revealed through a series of pre-recorded videotapes ambered in the lab.

The tapes lead to several components of a device, including a young Observer child, named Michael Spencer List in Season 1 and Rowan Longworth in Season 5but further allude to a man named Donald that had helped Walter prepare the plan.Fringe might have had a bit of a rocky start in the first season, but it soon became one of the best sci-fi shows around during its five-season and episode run.
